The kitchen has long held the title of “the heart of the home.” So much more than the place where meals are made and shared, the kitchen is where the stories of the day unfold over after school snacks, where impromptu dance parties take place, where recipes are passed down from one generation to the next and where the healing of boo-boos and heartbreaks begin with a perfectly timed bowl of ice cream. At Green River Builders, when we hold our homebuyer orientation walk-throughs before we head to the closing table, the room that elicits the most excitement every time is the kitchen. Our homebuyers collaborate with our designer to create the framework for the kitchen of their dreams – from the cabinets and countertops right down to the pendant lights and drawer pulls. To enhance that design once you’ve moved into your new Green River Builder home in time to host your first dinner party, you might want to find inspiration in the latest trends in kitchen design. We’ve compiled five of our favorites…
Floating Shelves
Taking a cue from the minimalist movement, floating shelves have found their way back into the kitchen. If you have a rustic wood table, you may want to use rustic wood floating shelves in a similar color to bring balance to the space. Wood accents and wood stools in a comparable shade at the kitchen island will further enhance the sense of balance. Floating shelves can serve a practical purpose by storing your plates and glassware or they can simply serve a décor function to highlight art and knickknacks that play off your color theme. We’re seeing the popularity of light woods on the rise.
Cabinets Packed with Color
For eons, kitchen cabinets were often crafted from a variety of woods and stained or painted white. Today, interior designers are literally coloring outside the lines and bringing bold shades of black, blue, gray, green and more to kitchen cabinets everywhere. You’ll even find two tone cabinets where the upper cabinets may be a contrasting color from the lower cabinets and central kitchen island.
Personal Pantry Coffee Bar
More and more homebuyers are endeavoring to clear off their counters for a crisp, clean, uncluttered look in their kitchens. As a result, they need someplace tucked away to place the items they use on a daily basis - like their coffee machines. We are receiving regular requests for the placement of electrical outlets in our walk-in pantries, so homeowners can create their own little out of sight coffee bar oasis.
Kitchen Cabinets Mirrored in the Dining Room
As the open concept design continues to reign supreme – uniting the kitchen, family and dining rooms –it’s not unusual for us to receive the request to create a built-in buffet in the dining room that reflects the same colors and materials found in the neighboring kitchen cabinets and countertops. We’re also starting to see the earliest rumblings of the rebound of the banquette, also mirroring the look of the kitchen cabinets and island in a corner of the breakfast room but in bench seating.
Eye-Catching Lighting
Today’s light fixtures do double duty as room illuminators and décor. From oversized chandeliers over the kitchen table to large lantern pendant lamps over the kitchen island, we’re still seeing a mix of industrial-themed and modern farmhouse-inspired design dominating the field. In keeping with the rise in popularity of light woods, rattan lampshades are also experiencing a renaissance of sorts.
Of course, the best way to create your own vision of “the heart of the home” is to build it from the ground up –working closely with a builder and design team who have your best interests at heart.
