As a homebuilder founded on the creation of environments that convey an undeniable sense of Southern Hospitality, Green River Builders is a major fan of the traditional front porch. Here in the South, the front porch is a symbol of welcome – a place where you can wave to neighbors as they stroll past your home, maybe even inviting them to join you in a rocking chair while you sip on sweet tea and catch up on all the local gossip. With Spring in full swing and Summer right around the corner, it’s the ideal time to check in on the latest front porch trends. We’ve selected five of our personal favorites to share with you.
A Palatial Porch Swing
While porch swings are a staple on porches throughout the South, we’re really in love with this tranquil twist on a classic. The porch swing bed – filled with overstuffed cushions and colorful throw pillows – offers an ideal space to sway your cares away. It’s basically a daybed without legs, hung from sturdy ropes. Just imagine curling up there with a good book and a breeze – you’ll be napping in no time.
Green Thumbs Gone Wild
Just as indoor gardens continue to remain strong in interior design, the same holds true for outdoor living spaces. Show off your skills as a gardener by filling your front porch with flowers – from container planters on either side of the door, to small pots filled with pretty things on your side tables, to hanging plants to frame your porch. You’ll be blurring the lines between your landscaping and your Mother Nature-inspired décor.
An Exciting Extension of Your Interior
And while we’re on the subject of blurring the lines, your outdoor living spaces should serve as an extension of your interior. They should stand out, not stick out like a sore thumb. Use a similar color story – one that complements your exterior paint colors, as well as a similar design style. If your interior is Modern Boho, you can carry that theme outdoors. Don’t be afraid to bring some of the things most people associate with the indoors outside – like a table or floor lamp that’s safe for outdoor use or several throw rugs that are manufactured to weather the elements.
“Wood” You Like to Sit a Spell?
Taking another cue from interior trends, wood is all the rage right now. Instead of the classic white wood rocking chairs, consider a wood-stained set of rockers with side tables to match. You can also opt for chairs and settees that you can make more comfortable and inviting with cushions and pillows. Cypress, Cedar, Teak, White Oak and Mahogany are all terrific woods for outdoor furniture.
Gather ‘Round the Fire, Folks!
As the popularity of firepits continues to hold strong, more and more manufacturers are developing products intended for smaller spaces – like a front porch. A coffee table that does double duty as a fire pit will prove popular on breezy Summer nights and will extend the enjoyment of your porch well into Fall.
