Room to Grow: Four Compelling Reasons to Expand Your Living Spaces with a Finished Basement
Return to BlogIt’s true. Finishing a basement will expand your taxable square footage. However, the return on that investment will go a long way when you opt to design and use that space in a way that makes the most sense for your family. By finishing your basement while your home is being built, you eliminate the risk of relegating that lower ground floor to a dark, dank, scary space you mainly use for storage. A space that you’ll have to dig your way out of should you choose to finish it down the road. At Green River Builders, when we build one of our stunning floor plans on a basement lot, we encourage the buyer to incorporate the finishing of that basement into the purchase. Not only will it enhance your enjoyment of your new home even further, but it will also serve as a great selling point in the event you ever choose to move (but we don’t believe you’ll ever want to move!) To support the stance that it’s better to have a finished basement than an unfinished basement – where spiders like to hang out – we’ve compiled our own list of four compelling reasons…
Create a Space to Play
While we design our homes with an abundance of gathering spaces – keeping both adults and children in mind – it’s always nice to have PLENTY of room to spread out… or come together. You may have a family room for movie nights, an upstairs retreat that serves double duty as a homework zone and playroom and one or two outdoor gathering spaces for dining al fresco. By adding a dedicated game room downstairs, you have a place where you can go and PLAY as a family. From retro arcade games to a ping pong or pool table, you can designate certain nights of the week for family fun time. The other days, when the kids have friends over, you can offer them a safe place to hang out.
Design an Environment for Entertainment
For the couple who loves to entertain guests, you might opt to create your own version of the neighborhood pub, complete with built-in bar with barstools, cozy sectional for seating and large flat-screen TV for watching your favorite football, baseball, basketball and soccer teams. You can even give a finished look to the patio below your deck so the party can flow outdoors to a firepit with seating that’s ideal for stargazing and reminiscing.
Incorporate a Place to Stay
The perfect option for the occasional multi-night guest, a college aged kid or aging parents that you want to keep close by, your finished basement can be designed to serve as a full apartment – complete with spacious bedroom, full bathroom, living space and kitchen. This has become an increasingly popular usage for finished basements. According to Pew Research, multi-generational households are on the rise. As of March 2021, there were 59.7 million Americans living with multiple generations under one roof – whether that’s adult children living with their parents or older parents moving in with their kids.
Bring Work Home with You
With more and more companies turning to a work-from-home model, we’re seeing a significant rise in the number of requests for home offices. A finished basement is the ideal location for a home office – offering more privacy for zoom calls and even a place to host co-workers or clients when well-designed. We can incorporate built-in bookcases, a conference space, wiring optimized for technology – anything you need to be and feel more productive.
